MID MOD REBIRTH

A large 700 sqft Kitchen/Family room cut in half by a protruding peninsula with a strategically ill-placed central sink - first thing guests were met with piles of dirty dishes in middle of room, bottlenecks from lack of flow, waste of unused space and non-existant work triangle, not to mention acoustic ceiling tiles, victorian molding and shag carpeting - everything had to go!

By replacing the peninsula with an island and stretching it into the family room, we were able to free up flow between areas and by repositioning the sink over the window with the fridge nearby enables the centrally placed island cooktop to become the center of a really functional work triangle. The island cooktop has a retractible downdraft vent which maximizes view especially when entertaining and tucks away neatly when not in use.

For the remaining Family room space the structure remained unchanged. Instead we focused on simplifying the space with natural wall material finishes - a soapstone hearth with a tinted plaster fireplace surround and a sapele shiplap siding in narrow 4" widths to complement the extensive brick throughout the house
